Kyle sits in the Rural Municipality of Lacadena No. 228, 72 kilometres north of Swift Current on Highway 4. It lies along the remains of the historic Swift Current–Battleford Trail. The village was named in 1923 for its original settler, Kyle Meekis.
In 1964, crews doing road construction near town came across the bones of a woolly mammoth some 12,000 years old. The bones are now on display at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Regina, and the discovery is still one of the things Kyle is best known for locally.
Today Kyle is also the nearest community to La Reata Ranch, a working cattle ranch that doubles as a resort where guests can experience the cowboy lifestyle first-hand. Out on the road to Clearwater Lake Regional Park stands one of the last few drive-in theatres in Western Canada, a popular summer evening spot for young and old.
